Alan Barry Auby was born in Madison, WI on August 8, 1941. To almost everyone who knew him, he was known as Al. Al graduated from Madison East High School. He loved music and was a talented percussionist. Al marched in the Madison Scouts from 1956-1959. Later he came back to be a percussion instructor for the scouts from 1966-1970.
Al attended Evangel College in Springfield, Missouri where he met Carolyn, who became his wife for 56 wonderful years. When the couple moved to Sun Prairie, Carolyn became a first grade teacher in the Sun Prairie school system. Al enjoyed a successful career in human resources working for the State of Wisconsin, Alliant Energy, and in his own Executive search firm. Al and Carolyn had 3 wonderful sons, all of whom marched in the Sound of Sun Prairie: Gregg (trumpet, Class of ’85), Scott (trumpet, Class of ’86), and Mike (drums, Class of ’88).
When Al and Carolyn’s kids got involved in the Sound of Sun Prairie, Al also wanted to help out. He volunteered to assist with instruction of our percussion section. From 1982 through 1990, Al was our head percussion instructor, guiding the section to achieve many awards and recognition. In 1985 Al received the Wisconsin Music Educators Conference Community Service Award for Outstanding Service to Community Music and Music Education.
In 1991 the Sound of Sun Prairie proudly honored Al and Carolyn as the Flags of Freedom Parade Marshalls for their many years of service.
Al enjoyed working with the Sound of Sun Prairie, and leaves a legacy of many Sound students who benefited from his instruction. He also enjoyed the camaraderie among Sound staff members and considered many staff members to be among his closest friends.
When Al was not involved in marching band, he was very involved in his church. Al would participate in both the music programs and in various leadership positions. His passion for music led him to directing a variety of choirs as part of his christian faith. He would also be involved in leading worship when called upon.
Sadly, our world lost this fine man on November 24, 2020, but his kindness and never ending passion to helping others will never be forgotten through our memories.
The Bernie Powers Band Foundation is proud to recognize Al Auby with this Distinguished Service award for all you did to help others through our band program. You are a true hero and we thank you.
